The members of the Clover Choir are expected to set a positive example. Singing in the choir is not only a privilege, but it is also a responsibility. We would like to develop an appreciation for commitment. The following requirements are outlined below:
Auditions Auditions are required for membership in the Clover Choir and the Student Cantor Ministry. The choir is open to students in grades sixth through eighth. (Fifth grade by invitation only) Cantors must remain an active member of the choir. The audition process will take 10 minutes. Potential choristers will be required to sing a song of her/his choice a cappella. Range and the ability to match pitch will be tested.
Citizenship and Academic Policy
Members are expected to act in or out of uniform in a manner which reflects the outstanding reputation and standards of St. John the Baptist Catholic School. The following statement can be found in the Student/Parent Handbook under Academic Policies:
Academic Eligibility for All Extra Curricular:
Recognizing the primary importance of academic success for each student, St. John the Baptist School does not permit any student with less than a “C” (73%) overall average and/or less than a “B-“ (82%) in responsible behavior to participate in ongoing extra-curricular programs such as athletic teams, cheerleading, Clover Choir, drama performances, etc. At the middle and end of each trimester a list of those students not eligible for such activities will be distributed to all teachers, coaches and moderators. Students on the list become ineligible the day the list is distributed and remain ineligible until the next list is issued at the beginning or middle of the next trimester (at which time students who become eligible again may participate in extracurricular pending the approval of the coach or moderator of the extracurricular program). Students who are ineligible at the end of the third trimester may become eligible for the first trimester of the following school year by raising their grades to the required level during summer school.
Note: Student cantors on the ineligible list will be not be scheduled for morning Mass until they return to the choir.
Attendance Policy Rehearsals
Parents must be on time to pick up students after rehearsal. Please review the school daycare policy in the school handbook. Additional rehearsal days may be added as needed to prepare for performances. All choristers play an important role in our success. The group as a whole cannot excel when part of the group is missing, so we ask that all choristers honor their commitment and make every effort to attend all rehearsals and performances.
Members must attend all rehearsals and events scheduled unless prior notice is given by the chorister or parent to the director. All members must sign the attendance log book at each rehearsal and performance. Performances are not optional. All members are expected to be at all performances. Missing performances and rehearsals will be grounds for dismissal. Severe illness is exempt from this policy.
Note: Choir members are able to participate in SJB athletics with coach permission and knowledge of the choir performance schedule. The coaches and the director will work together so that all choristers have the opportunity to participate in school athletic activities and still maintain acceptable rehearsal attendance.
Be on time for rehearsals and performances. Practice good work ethic (no excessive side talking during rehearsals) Disruptive behavior will be met with either a conduct slip or with demerits. Keep music folder neat and orderly. Use the pencil provided to mark the music. Do not deface practice folders, performance binders, or music. Know the music and have confidence and command of the repertoire.
Student Cantor Ministry
All candidates must display responsible behavior, be poised and posses good tone, pitch and diction. Cantors play an important role in the Liturgy by leading the assembly in sung prayer. The student cantor is responsible for proclaiming the daily responsorial psalm. Those selected to be a part of the student cantor ministry must follow the guidelines below:
- The Cantor Ministry is for those who are self-motivated. Cantors must be prepared to practice independent of the director. No cantor will be placed on the weekly schedule without demonstrating competent vocal leadership skills. Attend at all scheduled rehearsals is required.
- There will be a monthly Mass schedule posted in the music room. Cantors are to be well groomed and dressed in regulation school uniform on scheduled Mass days. (No PE shorts and shirts) Hair is to be pulled back and away from the face and skirts are to be school regulation length.
- Pick up any music necessary for the Mass in plenty of time to practice. Cantors are responsible for organizing their own music. Binders will be provided. Contact the director if you need additional help with the music. Any cantor on the ineligibility list will return to the ministry when they become eligible for extra–curricular activities. (See Academic Eligibility for Extracurricular)
- Only those 7th or 8th grade cantors who know the order of the liturgy, display reverence, poise and have the highest vocal leadership skills will be asked to cantor the monthly Student Body Mass.
Note: Student cantors on the ineligible list will not be scheduled for morning Mass until they return to the choir.

Snack Sign-up Sheet
Singing is an aerobic activity because it exercises major muscle groups in the upper body. Singing can even increase mental alertness through oxygenation. After a long day of school most of the students are hungry. In order to maintain energy and concentration we have a healthy snack and plenty of water for rehearsals. We ask that each family take a turn in providing a snack for rehearsals. There is a snack sign-up sheet included in the guidelines. Parents please review the dates and sign-up for two days.
Clover Choir Updates
Choir update will be e-mailed to all choir parents. Fill out the parent email address request on the Choir Contract Form so that e-mails can be received in a timely manner.
